Toy Story 5 Hits Different When You're a Mom: A Reflection on Childhood, Technology, and Connection

I can't believe Toy Story has been part of our lives since 1995. Like many parents today, I grew up watching Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang. I was 18 when the first movie came out, and I loved following their adventures. More than 30 years later, I'm now watching Toy Story 5 with my girls, a true full-circle moment.

And honestly? The experience hit differently. Of course, there was the nostalgia. Seeing familiar characters on the big screen again immediately brought me back to my childhood. But this time, I wasn't watching through the eyes of a child. I was watching as a mom.

One of the things that stood out to me in Toy Story 5 was how relevant the story feels in today's world. Without giving away any spoilers, the movie touches on a topic many parents can relate to, the growing role of technology in our children's lives.

To be honest, seeing how many children today turn to gadgets for entertainment, communicate through chat groups instead of face-to-face conversations, and spend time together while staring at separate screens breaks my momma heart a little. I've seen it happen in restaurants, family gatherings, and even playdates. Kids can be sitting side by side but still feel worlds apart because they're focused on their devices.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti-technology, and I'm certainly not judging parents who allow their children to use gadgets. I know there are moments when we need something to keep them occupied while we finish a chore, get some work done, or attend to something that requires our full attention even if it's just for a few minutes.

Technology is part of our children's world, and I know screen time is here to stay. My daughters use gadgets for school, learning, creativity, and staying connected. That's why I don't see it as technology versus traditional toys. I believe there's value in both.

But watching the movie reminded me of something important. There is still so much value in imaginative play, real conversations, outdoor adventures, and simply being present with one another. I don't think it has to be technology versus traditional toys. There's room for both. As parents, our role is to guide our children, set healthy boundaries, find balance, and help them enjoy a variety of experiences while creating meaningful connections along the way.

That was probably my biggest takeaway from the film.

Beyond the laughs, adventure, and familiar faces, Toy Story 5 made me reflect on the kind of childhood we're creating for our kids. As I watched the movie with my girls, I couldn't help but smile. The same characters that made me laugh as a child are now making memories with the next generation.

And maybe that's the magic of Toy Story. It grows with us. Whether you're watching it as a child, a teenager, or a parent, the story always seems to find a way to speak to where you are in life.

If you grew up with Woody and Buzz, be prepared for all the nostalgia feels. And if you're watching with your kids, you might find yourself reflecting on parenthood, childhood, and the importance of connection in a world full of distractions.

Toy Story 5 isn't just another sequel. For me, it was a reminder to put down the screens once in a while, be present, and make room for the simple moments that become the memories our children will carry with them for years to come.

Catch Toy Story 5 now showing at SM Cinema. Bring your family and friends, relive a piece of your childhood, and create new memories with the people you love. After all, some stories are meant to be shared across generations.
